One year after opening its doors to the El Sobrante community, the Copper Mug is marking a major milestone with an “Anniversary Party” Saturday, March 28 at 7 p.m. that will include a customer potluck of their own cultural dishes.
Owner Kay Sandu said that approximately 100 steady customers are already planning to come, with one—Danny Gomez—planning to bring his beloved strawberry cake. It’s “so good,” said Sandhu. Amid various customers bringing dishes and his own restaurant menu, Sandhu plans to play 80’s and 90’s music over the venue’s speakers that night.
After launching in March 2025 after extensive renovations, the Copper Mug quickly established itself as a local gathering place where guests come for a drink, meal and for connection. Sandhu told the Standard that the Anniversary Party is “a way of thanking all of my customers for being a part of us.” Customers tell him they really want the restaurant and bar to succeed and so he said its “one year anniversary is worth marking.”
Sandhu’s goal since purchasing the building in January 2024 was to create a clean, welcoming restaurant that works equally well as a family dining spot and a neighborhood bar. Unlike larger city establishments, he wanted a place where customers know the owner by name. That philosophy shaped the Copper Mug’s first year in business and continues to guide its future.
The restaurant’s name itself speaks to personal history and intention. Sandhu named the Copper Mug in tribute to his grandmother, who used to give him water in a copper mug, believing in its mineral benefits. That blend of tradition and modern hospitality has become part of the restaurant’s identity.
Fusion cuisine is central to the Copper Mug’s success. The kitchen is led by Sandhu’s father‑in‑law, Chef Bhola Samra, alongside Laxman, known as “Lucky,” a longtime collaborator from Nepal. Since their beginning, the kitchen crew has added Shanti as the sous chef. Together, they’ve built a menu that blends Indian, Nepalese and American influences, featuring neighborhood favorites such as Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, momos, Samosa Chaat and Pineapple Rice.
Sandhu said other members of his core team are Ebony and also Julia Chen, who are bartenders. New additions at the Copper Mug include a natural edge wine bar being added in an alcove, and other related embellishments being 50 percent done. The owner said he’s also added two live trees from floor-to-ceiling within the building.
Behind the scenes, Sandhu invested nearly $400,000 into renovating the space, redoing everything from the kitchen and bathrooms to the AC and bar systems. Upcycled décor, including live‑edge tables made from salvaged wood, adds character and warmth. A small outdoor patio and a room with a stage have further expanded how the community uses the venue.
As the Copper Mug celebrates its first anniversary, the party is less about marking time and more about honoring relationships built over the past year. From craft beer and signature cocktails to shared meals and neighborhood gatherings, the Copper Mug’s first year has laid the foundation for many more to come at 4203 Valley View Rd. in El Sobrante.
