Locals looking to savor a Moscow Mule, or some wide-ranging fusion food, will find just what the doctor ordered at Copper Mug in El Sobrante.
The family friendly restaurant/bar space was purchased by Kay Sandhu in January 2024, and after extensive renovations, launched in March 2025. The friendly owner has a penchant for mules, traditionally served in the businesses’ namesake copper mug, and knows a thing or two about craft beer, custom cocktails and good eats with a Indian/Nepalese/American blend.
The restaurant’s name is also a tribute to Sandhu’s beloved grandmother, who used to give him water in a copper mug due to its power as an essential mineral.
Sandhu’s vision? The Punjab, India native said that he sees the Copper Mug as a clean, family friendly restaurant that also happens to have a great bar. A nice neighborhood joint where people not only know his name, but also can connect with him too.
Heading up the kitchen at the Copper Mug is his father-in-law, Chef Bhola Samra. Also in the kitchen there’s Laxman or “Lucky” from Nepal, who Sandhu has worked with for five years. Together, they have cooked up numerous faves among the neighborhood crowd, such as Chicken Tikka Masala; Butter Chicken; Samosa Chaat; Vegetarian, Chicken and Pork Momos (dumplings); Pineapple Rice; and Chicken Wings. “In a week, we go through about 100-150 orders of Chicken Wings,” said Sandhu.
“We have Spicy Calamari Wings, Butterfly Shrimp, California Catfish and California Tilapia,” he said about the eatery’s soon-to-launch seafood menu. A small, outdoor patio sits at the front of the building, perfect for enjoying a beer or a bite while watching the sunset.
Since Sandhu hails from Punjabi, where a large section of the community is vegetarian, the Copper Mug’s kitchen knows how to prepare vegetarian cuisine correctly. “We use separate utensils and separate fryers for our vegetarian items,” he said.
The bar section of the business offers up craft beer (20-plus taps) and various cocktails, including numerous incarnations of the Moscow Mule. The most popular drinks include Kay’s Indigo Fizz, Lavendar Lemon Drop, KT’s Hennessey Black White Russian, Cucumber Lemon Twist and Guiness served on a Dublin tap system, “which makes it the creamiest stout,” according to Sandhu. Among the taps is root beer for the younger set or those wanting a non-alcoholic drink.
Plans include adding a wine section and sound dampening panels to improve the customer experience. A room off the bar includes a small stage and tables. It’s proven a popular meeting space for a local women’s group, which Sandhu said they now call “our spot.” Future plans include introducing parent-child karaoke events, chess club meet-ups and a “Christmas Party” on Dec. 19.
After coming to the Bay Area, Sandhu moved from South San Francisco to Rodeo and bought a house there in 2014. He entered the beer industry in 2015, working for Anheuser Busch, Knee Deep Brewing Company and later as a co-owner of Yeti Sports Bar in Berkeley, a café-style restaurant with a large tap room.
Sandhu sold his stake in the Berkeley restaurant in 2023 to focus on the Copper Mug, aiming to establish a premium and family-friendly atmosphere that he solely owned.
He emphasized the importance of customer service and creating a welcoming environment for all of his patrons. “I get so many good compliments from people. They’re like, ‘We really wanted a spot like this.’”
