The El Cerrito Police Department announced Wednesday it closed its investigation into a report that a man inappropriately touched a student through the fence at Fairmont Elementary School on Thursday, March 20.

A police captain told the Standard that the student later recanted the story about the unsettling incident. A subsequent followup investigating did not find evidence of such an incident, police said.

In a statement, police added “that there is no threat to the school or the community.”

At 12:35 p.m. March 20, school officials reported that a man standing on the sidewalk outside of the school on Eureka Avenue stuck his fingers through the fence and touched a student on their hair and neck. The man was stated to have fled the scene. Officers arrived on scene within two minutes of the report but were unable to locate a suspect. The incident prompted the call for additional police patrols and other safety measures at the campus.
