The son of a former Richmond Police Department K9 handler recently made a heartfelt donation to the RPD K9 Unit in remembrance of his father.
Michael Spangler, son of the late Officer Noel E. Spangler, who served in Richmond for 22 years from 1955 to 1977, recently contacted the RPD to share that his daughter was promoted to the rank of sergeant with the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.
Spangler commemorated the occasion with a donation to the RPD K9 Association, and also by donating a memory box of her grandfather that included his officer badge, his K9 badge, a callbox key and a photo of Officer Spangler with his K9 PFox.
“We are humbled by this gesture, celebrating the pride and tradition of generations in law enforcement,” RPD officials said. “Families like the Spangler’s showcase the dedication and service passed down through the years. Their commitment to recognizing public safety strengthens our community bonds and honors the legacy of those who served before.”
The RPD K9 Unit was formed in 1961 and is second only to the Stockton Police Department as the longest continuous canine program in Northern California. The unit was formed so the canines could search the city’s large industrial buildings quickly with only the assistance of the handler and another officer. Prior to this unit, it would take several officers long periods of time searching these buildings for potential suspects.
