San Pablo health complex taking shape with WIC groundbreaking

A ground-breaking ceremony in San Pablo Monday celebrated the future site of the Women’s, Infants, and Children (WIC) building at 501 Gateway Blvd.

During a ceremony attended by elected officials, county staff and others, the new building set to be located near the West Contra Costa Health Center at 13601 San Pablo Ave. was billed as one piece in a growing complex of healthcare buildings at that site.

The new WIC building will be 7,500 square feet, with the WIC office taking up 6,500 square feet and the remaining 1,000 feet being part of the County’s Behavioral Health office. There will be 17 WIC staff and 10 Behavioral Health employees in the new building when completed.

“Basically we are creating…a complex of health-related buildings — WIC, medical, behavioral health — all in one location so we can have that interaction, which is very useful,” said Steve Harris, planning director for Contra Costa Health Services.

The WIC program is a federally-funded health and nutrition program supporting pregnant and postpartum women, infants and children under 5 years old.

“It serves hundreds of families, especially pregnant moms and also the dads,” Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia said. “It’s really helped with nutritional and health services.”
