One of region’s largest tissue banks moves to Richmond

San Rafael has the tears, but Richmond gets the tissue.

The nonprofit Tissue Banks International (TBI) moved its operations from San Rafael to Richmond this month as the Baltimore-based company looks to expand locally. The news was first reported by the Marin Independent Journal.

On Jan. 13, TBI moved about 90 employees into its new digs at 880 Harbor Way South, spokeswoman Nancy Thrust said. The building is two to three times larger than its San Rafael location, which was 28,689-square feet.

The nonprofit procures tissue from deceased donors and makes the tissue viable for transplant surgeons and their patients in Northern California and throughout the U.S.

“We are very excited to be in Richmond and look forward to establishing robust community partnerships that help further our mission of changing lives throughout California and the U.S.,” Thrust said.
