Ex-NFL players partner with Richmond-based company on medical marijuana research

A coalition of former NFL players has hired a Richmond-based company to provide medical-grade formulations of marijuana oil for research purposes.

The Gridiron Cannabis Coalition announced Thursday (news release here) its intent to study whether cannabis extracts can effectively treat long-term damage from sports careers. The group, which includes more than 30 ex-NFL players, will be provided its medical grade cannabis from Richmond-based Constance Therapeutics, described as having one of the most advanced labs on the West Coast.

The coalition includes co-founder Boo Williams, a former tight-end with the New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs; ex-Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon and Pro-Bowler Ricky Williams.

Since the U.S. government won’t allow for medical marijuana research, suffering former athletes are taking it upon themselves to test the drug’s medicinal merits.
