Saturday’s free Food Day event in Richmond to promote healthy diets

Community invited to 5th Annual Food Day event in Richmond Saturday

The West County community is invited to celebrate National Food Day on Saturday at Nevin Street Plaza in Richmond, an event promoting healthy diets and access to responsibly produced foods.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the free event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the plaza located between Marina Way and 13th Street.

Folks will enjoy children’s games, giveaways, a healthy foods scavenger hunt and food education, among other activities. Local leaders will speak at 11 a.m., and during the event residents will have the opportunity to get receive free medical screenings or sign up for Cal-Fresh.

This is the fifth annual running of the event in the city and aims to empower a community that has suffered from high rates of obesity.

“Food Day is a day to resolve to make changes in our own diets and take action to solve food-related problems in our communities at a local, state and national level,” said Laneisha Whitfield, project manager for the Richmond Food Policy Council.

In anticipation of Food Day, several events have been held across Richmond and North Richmond throughout this week, including healthy cooking demonstrations, produce giveaways at elementary schools, lunchtime Zumba classes and more.
