Locals seeking more information during the Medicare open enrollment period, which began Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7, can attend a free counseling session in Richmond on Nov. 22.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Contra Costa Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (CCC HICAP) is holding free confidential sessions at the West Contra Costa Adult School at Alvarado Campus, 5625 Sutter St.
The open enrollment period is important. New prescription drug and health plan choices could save money, offer better coverage, or both. Also, effective Dec. 31 three Medicare Advantage plans are leaving Contra Costa County, including the Health Net Ruby, SCAN Options, and SCAN Balance.
“This year 6000-plus Medicare beneficiaries [in the county] are being affected by contract non-renewals either by their HMOs or prescription medication providers,” said Leah McIntosh, volunteer outreach and coordinator for CCC HICAP.
