Richmond Museum of History makes fashion statement

Richmond Museum of History having Family Free Day on May 12

The Richmond Museum of History will soon unveil an exhibit looking at local fashion, and will kick off the dynamic display with a free reception.

The exhibit, dubbed Accessories, Accessories, Accessories!, opens Sunday, Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. and showcases the museum’s substantial collection of fashion accessories from the 20th century. Stylish hats, shoes, and jewelry worn by Richmond’s working class will be on view, as will vintage photos of Richmond residents wearing various accessories.

To help build the buzz, the museum will host a free reception that same day from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. August 7 is also Richmond Day, commemorating the 1905 incorporation of the city. The theme of the reception is Bouquets, Big Hats, and Bow Ties. Guests are invited to dress up and show off their personal style, which will be captured in a group photo taken at 2 p.m. on the museum steps. Attendees can also view colorful flower arrangements from local florists in the permanent exhibit or take a stroll through the museum’s Historical Monument & Rose Garden, which should then be in full bloom.

The new exhibit is being hosted in the museum’s Seaver Gallery and is slated to run through Dec. 23. The Richmond Art Museum is located at 400 Nevin Ave. Find out more at the venue’s website (
