Richmond Main Street Initiative receives national recognition

Richmond Main Street Initiative (RMSI) has been recognized for its efforts to revitalize Downtown Richmond by a national organization that represents more than 2,000 commercial districts in communities across the United States.

The National Main Street Center announced on July 5 that it had designated RMSI as an accredited Main Street America program for meeting rigorous performance standards. Each year, the National Main Street Center and its Coordinating Program partners announce the list of accredited Main Street America programs in recognition of their exemplary commitment to preservation-based economic development and community revitalization through the “Main Street Approach.”

The RMSI’s performance is evaluated yearly by California Main Street Alliance, which teams with the National Main Street Center to identify local programs that meet 10 performance standards. Evaluation criteria is used to identify communities that are fostering comprehensive and sustainable revitalization efforts—and include benchmarks such as building healthy public-private partnerships, maintaining an operating budget, tracking systematic growth and actively preserving historic buildings.

According to RMSI 2015 was a productive year of planning for projects in Downtown Richmond. RMSI worked with community partners a to implement a wide range of events and programs specifically designed to support local entrepreneurs, attract visitors to Downtown Richmond, and help the neighborhood remain clean and safe.

“Downtown Richmond has come a long way since we began using the Main Street Approach,” said Amanda Elliott, executive director for the RMSI. “More people are coming Downtown and our events and programs grow with each passing year.”

Main Street America has been helping revitalize older and historic commercial districts for more than 35 years and is now a network of more than 2,000 neighborhoods and communities, rural and urban, who share both a commitment to building better communities through preservation-based economic development.
