Thanks to Stephen Ashford’s 4th annual toy drive, kids in need in Richmond and East Palo Alto will have some cheer this holiday season.
The Richmond native and physical education teacher at East Palo Alto Charter School was joined by former San Francisco Giants Jack Clark, a four-time MLB All-Star, and Super Bowl Champion Dana Mclemore of The San Francisco 49ers for the annual toy drive, with some of the toys going to families being supported by the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program.
A Richmond High alumnus, Ashford has worked at the East Palo Alto Charter School for 19 years. Over the years, he’s become known for spearheading efforts to improve lives Bay Area-wide, such as his annual toy drive. Last year, two days after his 3rd annual toy drive, Ashford was recognized at Oracle Arena during half-time of a Golden State Warriors game for receiving the Walmart Community Playmaker Award recognizing his charitable works, according to the Mercury News.
Ashford, also a rapper known as Kontac, was commended for efforts over the years such as free sports camps for youth, raising over $10,000 for gym equipment for struggling schools, organizing funds for earthquake-ravaged Haiti, and more, the Mercury News reported.
Ashford has also assisted his cousin, former UCLA football standout Kenneth Walker III, in charity efforts benefiting GRIP.
