Salesian's James Akinjo looking for new school after UConn coach's firing

North Richmond native and Salesian College Prep basketball star James Akinjo is no longer committed to attending the University of Connecticut after the Huskies fired its coach, Kevin Ollie.

After Ollie was fired March 10, Akinjo “immediately announced his intention to ask for a release from his National Letter of Intent, which he signed last year,” according to the Hartford Courant.

On Monday, the four-star guard’s guardian, Rachel Jackson, posted a Tweet confirming that UConn had granted Akinjo a full release without penalty from the Letter of Intent.

Though it is unknown where Akinjo may end up, there are several media reports about reputable schools interested in him. For example, the Wichita Eagle reported a story with this headline: “Meet the point guard who just became Wichita State’s No. 1 recruiting target.”

We don’t think he’ll have a problem finding a new home.
