The Salesian College Preparatory boys and girls basketball teams each won Tri-County Athletic League championships over the weekend in front of a packed house at Hercules High.
The girls team defeated rival St. Mary’s College High School (Albany) 72-39, and the boys team defeated El Cerrito High 66-62 in overtime.
Head Coach Steve Pezzola called his team’s victory over St. Mary’s “a total team effort, our best of the year so far,” where “all twelve players contributed.” The team has four seniors but also five freshmen and three sophomores and managed a 10-0 league record for the third straight year.
The boys team also enjoyed an undefeated season in league play and extended its win streak to 17 games.
The game was described as a thriller, with lead changes up until the final minute of overtime.
“We’ve played a lot of close games this year, but our guys always find a way to win,” Head Coach Bill Mellis said. “Our players are young but they know how to persevere.”
Both Salesian teams now advance to the North Coast Section Playoffs as number one seeds, with the girls team enjoying a first-round bye. It will play in the quarterfinal game on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Salesian College Preparatory.
The boys team will face Roseland University Prep of Santa Rosa on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Salesian College Preparatory.
