Salesian alum Jeffrey Parker named MVP of Western Washington University tourney

Salesian alum Jeffrey Parker makes All-GNAC second team as sophomore

Salesian alum Jeffery Parker was blazing in the first two games of the season for Western Washington University (WWU), scoring a total of 43 points, including a whopping 18 points in the first 13 minutes of the first game against Notre Dame de Namur University.

The Vikings defeated Notre Dame de Namur 78-52 on Friday and Hawaii Hilo 84-73 on Saturday at the 13th Chuck Randall Men’s Basketball Classic, which WWU hosted.

Parker, a forward, earned the tournament MVP honor after leading his teams in points in both games.

Parker went 5-of-6 from the field in the first half of the season opener against Notre Dame.  At one point, WWU led 40-13 in the first half and never looked back. Against Hawaii Hilo, Parker led four Vikings in double figures with 22 points and also had a game-high 11 rebounds.

“I think we had a really good start this season,” Parker said in a post-game interview (see video). “This year I’m coming in with a real aggressive mindset to get to the rim, as well as crash the offensive boards. That’s something I really lacked last year and am pushing to do better this year.”

Parker said he also worked to improve his defensive game this summer.

WWU, ranked No.11 in the NABC/NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25, was without guards Jaamon Echols (Jr., Seattle/Rainier Beach) and Ricardo Maxwell (Jr., Cincinnati, OH/Withrow), who were serving a two-game suspension for violating NCAA regulations for improperly playing in a tournament last spring.

WWU next travels to Puerto Rico to play PR-Bayaman on Tuesday and PR-Rio Piedros on Wednesday.
