Richmond’s Mariah Williams, a freshman with the University of Nevada women’s basketball team, was named the Mountain West Preseason Freshman of the Year by the website College Sports Madness, her team announced Friday.
The honor was part of a preseason poll of the Mountain West’s 11 head coaches and media representatives. They picked Nevada to finish fifth in the conference this coming season.
Williams’ standout play in high school obviously has coaches excited to see what she will do in college. The 5-11 guard/forward tallied 101 points and 63 rebounds during her senior season at Vanden High School in Fairfield. She averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per game in 40 games while Vanden went 10-0 in league play, 25-7 overall last year. The high school team reached the Northern California Division III semifinals.
Nevada will host the Academy of the Arts for an exhibition contest at Lawlor Events Center on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. Regular season begins the following Friday, Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. with a home contest against UC Santa Barbara.
