Former Kennedy High football star Takkarist McKinley signed a letter of intent Thursday to play for UCLA and is immediately eligible to play, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The defensive end is slated to meet Coach Jim Mora early next week, according to the newspaper, which added that UCLA can use some help on its defensive line.
McKinley will reportedly have four years of eligibility.
The 6-foot-4, 235-pound defensive end, who most recently played at Contra Costa College, had been visiting top universities and had clocked a hand-timed 4.45-second 40-yard dash during a trip to USC in June.
After graduating from Kennedy High, McKinley signed with Cal in 2013 but did not qualify academically. In June, McKinley Tweeted that he was “thankful to have a second chance.”
His coach at Contra Costa College, Alonzo Carter, was understandably elated about the signing, Tweeting that 40 CCC players in three years have taken their talents to Division I.
