Video! Salesian defeats Miramonte, headed to state finals

USA Today ranks Salesian girls basketball team No. 2 in nation
Salesian poses following its victory at Sleep Train Arena last season that earned the team its first-ever trip to the championship game of the state's highest division.

With eight seniors, the Salesian girls basketball team went into this season determined to go all the way.

That determination was evident in the first quarter of the CIF Open Division Northern regional finals Saturday, as the Pride pulled to a commanding 24-5 lead over Miramonte at Sleep Train Arena. Salesian went onto win 76-64 and are now just one win from being crowned state champions.

Next Saturday, the Pride (30-6) will return to Sleep Train Arena to play Long Beach Poly (26-3) for all the marbles in the CIF state finals. Long Beach Poly earned the trip by defeating Etiwanda 56-46 in the southern division on Saturday.

Salesian’s star guard Mariya Moore scored just seven points against Miramonte, as she reportedly got into foul trouble early. But she had help. Kian McNair led the Pride with 18 points, Moore’s sister Minyon had 13 points and Deja Stallworth added 12.
