El Cerrito boys, Salesian girls and boys fall in NCS title games

WCCUSD sports schedule for this week

Bishop O’Dowd’s 6-foot-10 forward Ivan Rabb was too much of a tall order for El Cerrito on Saturday, scoring 29 points and causing three Gauchos to foul out in the Dragons’ 89-69 victory in the North Coast Section Division III championship at St. Mary’s College.

The Gauchos (28-4) had 33 fouls to the Dragons’ 16, according to MaxPreps.com, and Rabb sunk 13 free throws in the game and had 13 rebounds.

El Cerrito trailed by only two points at the half, but a reportedly inspiring half-time speech from an O’Dowd assistant coach led to a blowout second half in which the Gauchos were outscored 26-14 in the fourth quarter.

Sayeed Pridgett led El Cerrito with 17 points, Tyrell Alcorn added 16 and Anthony Sullen 11.

The loss for El Cerrito means the team might remain in Division III rather than the Open division in the upcoming CIF Division playoffs. Brackets for the tournament will be announced today.

St. Mary’s 65, Salesian 57 (girls)

Despite opening with an 11-point first-quarter lead, the Salesian girls basketball team could not hold off rival St. Mary’s High in the North Coast Section Division IV championship Saturday night at Dublin High.

The top-seeded Pride were outscored 46-24 in the second and fourth quarters, reportedly allowing St. Mary’s to win their second-straight Division IV title and its fifth in six years.

The Panthers were led by Mikayla Cowling’s 22 points and Ma’Ane Mosely’s 20.

For Salesian, junior Kian McNair had 18 points, senior Mariya Moore added 12 and  seniors Alana Horton and Zoe Correal added six apiece.

Moore also had eight rebounds, eight assists and six steals, while Correal brought down 12 rebounds.

Moreau Catholic 73, Salesian 68 (boys)

A game-winning three-pointer from the hot handed Brandon Lawrence gave Moreau Catholic its first North Coast Section Division IV title at Dublin High Saturday night.

Lawrence reportedly sunk the game-winner with just over 30 seconds remaining and led Moreau Catholic (24-6) with 21 points. For Salesian (20-14), Jonathan Galloway had 15 points and seven blocks, Bernard Ward added 13 and Marquel Johnson 12, according to statistics provided by MaxPreps.com.
