The Richmond Police Department (RPD) is alerting residents to a recent surge in Hyundai vehicle thefts locally.

RPD states circumstances vary as to why Hyundai cars are being targeted. Hyundai and Kia recently faced state legal action over security flaws that reportedly make cars easier to hotwire and steal. As part of a settlement, Hyundai and Kia agreed to equip all future vehicles sold in the U.S. with appropriate anti-theft technology and to offer anti-theft updates, free of charge, to owners or lessees of eligible vehicles.

If you own an affected Hyundai, you should contact a local dealership about those offerings. Residents can verify their car’s status by entering their VIN at HyundaiAntiTheft.com.

Richmond police further recommend using a visible steering wheel lock every time you park, which is often enough to make a thief move on to a different target.

You should also ensure your doors are locked, windows are up, and no spare keys or fobs are left inside.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously around parked cars, such as testing door handles or loitering in carports, call the Richmond Police non-emergency line at (510) 233-1214.
