Last Saturday marked a memorable finish to the marching season for the Richmond High School music program, as students competed at the Tournament of Champions hosted by Rodriguez High School in Fairfield.
The band, colorguard, jazz band and wind ensemble achieved several milestones, including a first-ever first place finish in colorguard, Band Director Andrew Wilke reported online. RHS also took second place in Marching Band in its division and fifth overall. The school achieved third place for Jazz Band and fourth place for Wind Ensemble (the first trophy ever earned by this group in the competition).
Wilke emphasized the significance of the day, noting that Monday and Wednesday marching rehearsals and the long 14-hour Saturdays are now behind the students. The relief is real, and well deserved.
The Tournament of Champions is an annual event hosted by Rodriguez High featuring dozens of high school bands competing across multiple disciplines. Saturday marked the 34th edition of the tournament.
