Artist Christopher Peterson has offered to gift the City of Richmond a painting titled Mond An-ex for inclusion in the city’s Public Art Inventory.

Peterson submitted the required documentation in June, initiating the formal review process outlined in Richmond’s Public Art Policies and Procedures.

Peterson has lived and worked in the Bay Area for more than 35 years and is known for his work as a painter and illustrator for publications and institutions including The New York Times and Time Magazine. The proposed gift is a 48-by-60-inch oil painting, framed in poplar and pine, inspired by a photograph taken at the Carlson Boulevard underpass. According to city documents, Peterson noted that the artwork depicts light and scenery from the Richmond Annex. He also expressed interest in having the piece displayed at City Hall, though staff indicated that the city may accept and store artwork before a display location is determined.

City staff reviewed Peterson’s submission and then on Sept. 12, the Richmond Arts and Culture Commission voted to recommend that the City Council approve acceptance of the gift.

Council approval, scheduled for this coming Tuesday, is required in the process to formally add Mond An-ex to the City’s Public Art Inventory.
