A day of artmaking and exploration is set to occur when “Fall Family Day” returns Saturday, Oct. 11, from noon to 3 p.m. to the Richmond Art Center (RAC). The free annual event is also tipping its hat to Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

“Our Family Days are a wonderful way to experience everything Richmond Art Center has to offer,” said the RAC’s Community Engagement Director Amy Spencer. “Visitors can make art in our courtyard, explore the galleries and peek inside our studios.”

Spencer said attendees come expecting lots of artmaking, but a fun surprise also awaits. Past pop-ups have included plant giveaways, live music and miniature lowriders. This year’s highlight? A performance by Danza Azteca Teokalli at 1 p.m. The Aztec dance troupe will set up an early Dia de los Muertos altar at the event and invite community members to contribute tributes to their loved ones that day.

An artist talk is scheduled with Luis Garcia at 12:30p.m. about his exhibition Seeds of Tradition. Hear from Garcia as he provides insights into his paintings and how they express cultural traditions and tell stories, according to Spencer.

Fall Family Day will also treat participants to a variety of hands-on art-making activities throughout the day. “Visitors can screenprint ‘Land Back’ posters with Julia LaChica (a coloring sheet version will also be available), try repujado (metal embossing) with Rachel-Anne Palacios and create zines with Shani Ealey,” said Spencer.

Light snacks and drinks will be available throughout the day. And don’t forget to say hello to the RAC’s new Interim Executive Director Jeff Nathanson at the event.

The event is made possible thanks to support from Arts Contra Costa County, a grassroots service and advocacy arts organization.
