A tragic industrial accident Sunday, Sept. 21, claimed the life of a UPS worker in Richmond.
Officers responded to reports of an accident in the 1600 block of Atlas Road at approximately 4:16 p.m.
According to preliminary findings, the employee, identified in a GoFundMe as 43-year-old Shelma Reyna Guerrero, was alone inside a cargo trailer, loading packages, when several boxes fell onto her. She was discovered later by a co-worker who immediately called emergency services. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, Guerrero was pronounced deceased.
The incident is currently under investigation as an industrial accident.
In a statement, UPS said it is fully cooperating with the authorities to get to the bottom of what happened.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our team members,” the company said. “Our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
In the wake of the tragedy, family members have launched a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses. Esmeralda Ocampo, cousin of Guerrero, stated in the fundraiser that a machine malfunction caused the accident.
“She was healthy, had no prior health issues,” Ocampo said. “As someone so young, none of us imagine preparing for something like this.”
Guerrero was described as an “amazing person with a beautiful soul.”
“She helped everyone who needed it,” Ocampo said. “She was always so positive and made our days better.
Guerrero reportedly leaves behind five children.
“All donations collected will go toward her services and will be given to my cousin,” Ocampo said. “Even if it’s a dollar, we thank you.”
