Before the plaque or applause, there was a pattern: Salvador Valle showing up to San Pablo Creek with gloves and grit, time after time.

A Rollingwood resident, Valle has spent the past six months giving his time to clearing trash from the creek so neighbors can enjoy a cleaner, safer waterway.

On Tuesday, Sept. 2, the San Pablo City Council formally honored that work, presenting Valle with a certificate of appreciation for “continuous volunteerism and environmental stewardship in keeping San Pablo Creek areas clean and safe.”

Mayor Arturo Cruz called Valle “a remarkable individual whose dedication and environmental stewardship have made a meaningful impact,” adding a line he said captures the spirit of the night: “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time, but they have the heart.”

‘A cornerstone of community action’

Resident Jim McCarty praised Valle as “a cornerstone of community-driven environmental action,” noting Valle’s creek cleanups, help organizing Rollingwood’s monthly efforts, and even lending an elderly neighbor a hand with yard work. McCarty said Valle’s consistency strengthens the missions of groups like SPAWNERS and The Watershed Project and urged neighbors to follow his lead at the 41st Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, Sept. 20.

“His work reminds me that environmental stewardship isn’t only about grand gestures. It’s consistent, committed action, often unseen and that truly make a difference,” McCarty said.

Councilmembers thanked Valle for his perseverance and invited an ongoing partnership with Public Works.
