Richmond man charged with attempted murder in bus driver attack

Mandingo Alfroconus Hayes, 54, of Richmond, faces felony charges including attempted murder after allegedly assaulting his spouse aboard an AC Transit bus near the Richmond BART station.

The assault occurred on Aug. 25 at approximately 7:35 a.m. Hayes is accused of attacking the driver, his spouse, inflicting knife wounds and exposing her to pepper spray. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Hayes is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility on a bond of $1.179 million. The charges against him include felony attempted murder with a knife-use enhancement and felony injuring a spouse. He also reportedly faces misdemeanor charges for resisting arrest for disobeying a domestic relations court order and possession of tear gas.

“Our office is committed to holding offenders accountable while ensuring survivors of domestic abuse receive the protection and support they need,” said District Attorney Diana Becton. “This prosecution reflects our broader mission to break the cycle of abuse and promote community safety.”
