The Richmond Main Library will close its doors on Aug. 1 to undergo a comprehensive renovation.
During the renovation, library services will be temporarily relocated to the Richmond Memorial Auditorium, with operations at the new location commencing on in early September (exact date has not yet been announced). Construction is expected to last 18 months.
The $30 million renovation project, supported by a $9.7 million grant from the California State Library and city funding, aims to modernize the 1949 building. Seismic upgrades, installation of a modern fire alarm and sprinkler system, restroom renovations to meet ADA standards, replacement of the elevator, and updates to lighting, HVAC, and electrical systems are all part of the project.
To celebrate the library’s 75-year history, a farewell event is scheduled for July 31. Festivities will include a Bubble Party in the Main Library Courtyard from 1-3 p.m. and a musical performance by Cello Joe in the Main Reading Room from 6-7 p.m.
During the renovation period, the Bayview Branch (5100 Hartnett Ave.) and West Side Branch (135 Washington Ave.) will remain open with regular hours, including Saturdays in August. Patrons can place holds for pickup at these branches.
