The nonprofit organization that has lovingly maintained the East Brother Light Station for over four decades announced an urgent campaign today aiming to raise at least $750,000 to replace the deteriorating pier and gangway—the sole means of accessing the island.
A GoFundMe has been launched. Constructed by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1962, the existing pier and gangway have suffered extensive damage from decades of exposure to harsh marine conditions, according to a statement distributed by Tom Butt, president of East Brother Light Station, Inc. Without these structures, the lighthouse’s operations, including its renowned bed-and-breakfast inn, would reportedly cease, leading to a significant loss of revenue necessary for ongoing maintenance and preservation efforts.
“The bed and breakfast inn would close, and the stream of funding critical for maintenance would quickly dry up,” Butt said. “The buildings would soon be destroyed by neglect, vandalism, and weather.”
To support the preservation of this historic site, donations can be made directly to East Brother Light Station, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. For more information or to contribute, contact Butt at tom.butt@intres.com or visit the official website at ebls.org.
Since 1980, the East Brother Light Station has operated as a unique bed-and-breakfast, offering guests an immersive historical experience complete with gourmet meals and panoramic bay views. The inn has hosted over 70,000 visitors, with proceeds directly supporting the lighthouse’s preservation. The station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized as a California Registered Historic Landmark.
The nonprofit has previously faced challenges, including a significant power outage in 2021 due to a damaged underwater cable. A successful GoFundMe campaign and community support helped lead to temporary repairs that enabled the inn to reopen and continue its mission.
