With 42 years of ongoing service, Jean Carney stands today as the longest serving employee of the city of Richmond. But longevity is just one of her many accomplishments.

At its meeting Tuesday, the Richmond City Council honored Carney for her dedication, describing her in a city proclamation as more than a colleague, but also as a mentor to many and as a pillar of professionalism, compassion and dedication.

Carney began her career on March 14, 1983, as a police assistant in the Richmond Police Department’s records unit. She has served in numerous divisions including patrol, traffic, investigations, and most recently as the department’s subpoena clerk.

She’s also volunteered countless hours to community service initiatives, including the Fire and Police Toy Drive and the youth “DARE” program.

“Jean Carney’s work ethic, knowledge, and warm spirit have left an indelible mark not only on the department but on the entire Richmond community, making her a trusted colleague, mentor, and friend to many,” states the city proclamation, which was read aloud by members of City Council Tuesday.

Carney attended the reading of the city proclamation. She expressed gratitude to her family and colleagues. She also thanked God for “giving me this opportunity and for allowing me the good health and strength to come to work every day.”
