An annual chess event is ready for players to make their moves in the Rich.
The 12th Annual Williams-Easterling Community Chess Tournament is set for Saturday, March 29 at the Richmond Recreation Complex and “will celebrate the great game of chess in our city while honoring the people who have helped elevate its visibility.”
On-Site Registration is from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and all participants must check in by noon. The free event will last until 5 p.m. Preregistration is highly encouraged and spectators do not need to reserve tickets—only participants need to do so.
During the event there will be a free Quad Tournament for all ages with rated (USCF membership required) and non-rated quads for 30-minutes time-controlled games. Trophies will be awarded to quad winners.
Free play will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., while rounds will occur at 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Chess sets and clocks will be provided.
Dr. McKinley Williams, president emeritus of Contra Costa College, and the late John Easterling—both of whom played key roles in promoting the royal game of chess within Richmond—will be honored by the West Coast Chess Alliance and the City of Richmond Community Services-Recreation for their contributions.
