The Richmond City Council honored the city’s Commission on Aging on Tuesday ahead of the commission’s 25th anniversary Senior Winter Ball.

Mayor Eduardo Martinez and Councilmember Gayle McLaughlin presented a proclamation to Commissioners Michelle Hayes (chair), Myrtle Braxton (vice-chair), Bryan Harris (secretary), Regina Whitney, Kiran Agarwal, Gerry La Londe-Berg, and Cate Burkhart (who attended virtually).

The city proclamation honored the Commission on Aging as “one of the most active commissions” in the city. The Senior Winter Ball, set to be held at Richmond Memorial Auditorium this year on Dec. 14 (6-10 p.m.), is its signature event.

The City of Richmond adopted an ordinance to create the Commission on Aging on Dec. 17, 1979, aiming to increase quality of life for local seniors. The Senior Winter Ball is just one of the ways the commission goes about doing that. Earlier this year, it held its first Senior Wellness Health Clinic.

In its proclamation, the city expressed “deep appreciation for past and continuing outstanding contributions of the Commission on Aging to the community and the City of Richmond and congratulates them on this momentous occasion of the 25th Silver Anniversary of the Senior Winter Ball.”

The commission noted that this year’s Winter Ball promises to be an “amazing extravaganza” with dinner, music, dancing, and warmhearted community engagement. To attend, contact the CSD Registration office at 510-620-6793 for the price of admission.
