A GoFundMe has been launched to support the family of a teenage boy who died in a crash involving an impaired driver in Richmond early Monday.
Ricardo Funes-Baraja, 16, of Richmond, was one of the drivers involved in a two-car crash in the area of S. 20th Street and Ohio Avenue just after midnight on Monday, police said. He died as a result of the collision, while the other driver, identified as a 30-year-old man, was deemed to be under the influence and was arrested after the crash.
“The impaired driver’s decision to drive drunk robbed a family of their child,” the Richmond Police Department stated in its report online. “When you choose to drive under the influence, you’re not just risking your own life—you’re endangering everyone on the road.”
Ricardo Funes-Baraja, known to loved ones as Ricky, was described as a sweet and intelligent boy who was loved by family, friends, teammates and teachers. He played basketball and loved going on drives in his Mustang. But most of all, he loved his family, and he leaves behind his parents and two younger brothers.
The fundraiser seeks donations to help pay for his funeral arrangements, which are planned for July 29.
“All are welcome to come and give their condolences during this time of tremendous loss and tragedy,” the fundraiser states.
