One person was injured while attempting to flee gunfire in the area of W. Richmond and Railroad avenues, and the suspect in the shooting was arrested shortly thereafter following a foot chase, police said today.

Richmond police dispatch received calls about shots heard in the area, and officers were on the scene within two minutes and saw the suspect walking from the scene on foot, police said. They attempted to stop him, but he fled and discarded a firearm.

Officers took him into custody without incident, but not before chasing him on foot for several blocks.

Officers recovered the firearm. No one was struck by the gunfire. The victim who sustained an injury while attempting to flee the gunfire was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The suspect was booked into the RPD jail for illegal possession of a firearm. Detectives are investigating, and additional charges could be filed at a later time, police said.
