An event aiming to celebrate and develop girls and womens soccer in Richmond is set to take place at Martin Luther King Jr. Field on Thursday, July 20. Girls participating in soccer in local communities are invited to take part. They might even end up on TV.
The Richmond Soccer Coordination Center, a relatively new collaboration of local soccer clubs advocating for more and better facilities with which to play their sport in the city, is hosting “Girl Power” at 6 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, 1300 Virginia Ave.
The event will include “training and activities for soccer, sports, nutrition and programs for the support and development of girls and women in Richmond,” according to the Center.
Attendees should note that during the Girl Power porgramming, Spanish-language media organization Noticiero Telemundo 48 will be filming for a story on girls soccer in Richmond. The news story was reportedly inspired by the recent local activism by local soccer organizations, including a rally held at the local Richmond City Council meeting on July 11. The filming will also occur on the first day of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“They want to know how the Spanish-speaking community feels about this great event,” the Center states.
The Girl Power event is a collaboration with Thrive Thursdays, a weekly health promotion event sponsored by Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia and Richmond City Councilmember Doria Robinson.
Note: Parents will need to give permission for the newscast to record their minor children in order to participate in the activities in this event. Girls are encouraged to show their soccer pride with their favorite FIFA Women’s World Cup national team jersey or club jersey.
