A family-owned, Richmond-based commercial construction company is celebrating its 25-year anniversary.
Since its humble beginnings, Bob and Shannon Alten have grown Alten Construction to annual revenues of more than $110 million and 100 employees—many of whom have worked at the company for 15-plus years.
The commercial construction company won its first bid from Laney and Merritt College in Oakland to renovate 23 bathrooms, and from there, it never looked back.
Since that first project, Alten Construction has completed approximately 200 projects, among them the historic Napa County Courthouse, San Francisco Fire Station No. 5, professional-quality theater at Palo Alto High School, historic Goodman Library, Mission Dolores Park renovation, City of San Rafael Public Safety Center, Menlo-Atherton High School and numerous others.
Back in 2017, Alten Construction renovated a 70-year-old factory in Richmond’s historic Marina Bay neighborhood and made it its new headquarters. According to company officials, the building was built in 1946 by a vitamin manufacturer and at one time also housed a lighting factory. The company received a Historic Preservation Award by the Richmond Historic Preservation Commission and the National Park Service in 2018 for its reimagined use of the former National Oil Products factory.
Highlights of Alten Construction’s remodeled Richmond headquarters, located at 1141 Marina Way S., include restored historic steel windows, environmentally responsible landscaping, courtyard spaces, an outdoor deck and an employee lounge, per the company.
