While many people were expressing thanks on Thanksgiving Day, dozens of Richmond residents were giving back at the Veteran’s Memorial Hall on 23rd Street on Thursday.
About 500 community members in need were treated to a clothing and food giveaway, along with free haircuts, hygiene products and more, at the 12th Annual Richmond SOL Thanksgiving event.
The event was yet again a success, with as many smiles as hot plates of delicious foods. The Richmond SOL soccer club teamed with a number of community partners, including That’s My Dog, to ensure local residents received a proper Thanksgiving.
“So 12 years ago…, with the Richmond SOL soccer program, we asked ourselves, What can we do to give back to the community?,” said Diego Garcia, owner of Leftside Printing on 23rd Street, community advocate and organizer. “One of the things we came up with: On Thanksgiving Day, why don’t we give thanks to the community? Bring everyone together, have a feast, bring food to give out, and of course some hygiene products.”
Kevin Muccular, owner of Richmond-based food company That’s My Dog, served delicious food at the event.
“Today was a beautiful collaboration between Richmond SOL and That’s My Dawg,” said Muccular. “What we’re hoping for is for the community at large to see the Hispanic and African American community coming together as one.”
