The community is invited to Supervisor John Gioia’s Open House Holiday Party on Thursday, Dec. 6, for a chance to support an annual charitable program providing books and hoodies to students of Verde Elementary in North Richmond.
The open house holiday party will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Supervisor Gioia’s Office, 11780 San Pablo Avenue, Suite D, El Cerrito.
Those who cannot attend can still support the program by donating tax-deductible cash or checks by Friday, Dec. 10, with checks payable to the non-profit “CHDC of North Richmond” c/o 2018 Verde Hoodie Drive.
Gioia, who has sponsored the Verde Elementary drive for 20 years, is looking to raise $10,000 this year to cover 395 custom school spirit hoodies and new books. For years, local businesses and individuals alike have contributed to the program.
In past years, it was called the Verde Elementary Toy & Coat Drive. This year, instead of toys, books will be provided to each student courtesy of West County READS, Gioia said.
“And instead of coats, every student gets a new, warm hoodie with the school’s colors and logo,” Gioia added.
Robert Rogers, district coordinator for the supervisor’s office, called the event “one of Supervisor Gioia’s most cherished traditions, because it brings together a big, diverse Contra Costa County community of supporters for the benefit of the children of North Richmond.”
“It’s a special feeling for these kids when they grab their books and school spirit hoodies,” Rogers said.
Gioia described Verde Elementary as a “shining light” in one of the lowest income communities in the Bay Area thanks to caring parents, educators and students.
