There’s a new Taqueria in town, and if our recent meal from there is any indication, you should consider sampling its tasty selections pronto.
Tucked away in a little spot at 130 Railroad Ave. in Point Richmond, Maya Taqueria swung open its doors Aug. 3, 2018, and according to owners Israel and Socorro Gutierrez, has been busy ever since. The family- operated eatery, which serves lunch and dinner seven days a week, features a delicious array of Mexican-style menu choices ranging from salads, to tacos, to burritos, to quesadillas to tortas, as well as ample vegetarian and seafood options.
On a recent lunchtime visit, The Rich Life sampled Maya Taqueria’s menu, ordering for take-out the Shrimp Burrito, a generously sized burrito featuring shrimp, beans, rice, salsa fresca, sour cream and cheese, and also the Tostada Salad, a crispy flour tortilla with beans, cabbage, jicama, cucumber, radish, carrot, queso fresca, salsa fresca, sour cream, dressing and grilled chicken. We ordered salsa, guacamole and tortilla chips on the side for good measure.
Both main dish selections were excellent, with the shrimp in the burrito tasting very fresh and the salad—which the taqueria can also prepare with a corn tortilla instead of flour—being one of the best ones this reporter has eaten in recent memory.
According to Israel Gutierrez, aside from what we ordered, other popular menu items include the Tacos Pastor (marinated pork tacos), Mango Salad and Butternut Squash Burrito.
While Maya Taqueria is nestled in an intimate setting that’s best set up for take-out orders, there are thin counters with stools running along each wall, as well as a handful of small café tables outside the front door. Service is warm and friendly and the eatery gives off the overall feel of eating at a skilled home cook’s kitchen table.
Many locals will be familiar with the Maya Taqueria taco truck, which has frequented numerous Point Richmond festivals. The taco truck is still available, but now only for catering purposes.
Hours of operation are: Sun.- Wed. 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thurs. 10 a.m.-10 p.m.; and Fri. & Sat. 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Call Maya Taqueria at 510-374-6594, email them at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit them on Facebook.
