Girl dances in quinceañera gown outside Richmond jail to be near dad

A 15-year-old girl’s dance in a quinceañera gown outside the West County Detention Center in Richmond on Saturday, where her father is being held after being detained by federal immigration authorities, is making national news.

The girl wanted to dance with her dad, Raul Lopez, for her quinceañera, but he was detained by ICE about a year ago after living in the U.S. for nearly 30 years, according to KPIX Ch. 5, which broke the story that was eventually picked up by CBS News.

So the girl decided to hold the dance as close as she could to her father — right outside the detention center. The video of her dressed in a ball gown dancing in front of a crowd of people is starting to go viral online.

Lopez’s wife said her husband was detained by ICE after he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol, according to KPIX. During a subsequent check-in at the San Francisco ICE office, he was detained by immigration authorities in March last year.

Saturday’s event outside the detention center was organized in part by the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity to raise awareness about Lopez and other immigrants being separated from their families. See the group’s photos from the event on its Facebook page here.
