The suspect in a Richmond fatal shooting on April 12 turned himself into police late last month, police announced Tuesday.
On Friday, June 1, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office charged 40-year-old Vernon Lamont Dowell with murdering 35-year-old Mark Johnson in the 200 block of S. 15 Street on April 12.
Dowell is suspected of fatally shooting Johnson in the 200 block of S. 15 street at about 9:40 a.m.
Police were called to the scene on a ShotSpotter alert and found Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.
Following an investigation, RPD Homicide Unit detectives learned that Johnson was in an argument with another man just before he was shot. Detectives pieced together several witness statements to identify Dowell as the suspect.
On April 24, police posted a picture of Dowell on social media and asked for the public’s assistance in locating him. Detectives received “numerous calls and leads of his whereabouts,” but they turned cold as Dowell remained on the run.
“Because of the pressure from tips we received about his whereabouts, Dowell decided to surrender peacefully on May 29,” police said.
