A project to install bicycle and pedestrian improvements along 37th Street between Cerrito and Center avenues in Richmond is set for approval at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
City staff is asking council to green-light a construction contract of over $800,000 to install bike lanes, ADA curb ramps, and improved crosswalks along .7 miles of 37th Street.
The project includes installing bulb-outs at Macdonald Avenue. It also includes making traffic signal operational improvements at Macdonald and Barrett avenues, along with installing video detection systems at both of those intersections.
The project calls for reducing vehicular lanes from four to three on 37th between Macdonald and Barrett avenues, a stretch of about .2 miles, and to add Class II bike lanes in each direction.
The project aims to increase traffic safety and “will facilitate increased bicycling, walking and transit use to schools, work and BART stations,” the city said.
Over $500,000 of the project will be funded through the Chevron Modernization Project Environmental and Community Investment Agreement (ECIA). About $286,600 will come from a federal grant.
The project appears on the consent calendar for Tuesday’s council meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in City Council chambers, 440 Civic Center Plaza.
Do the people making these decisions even use these streets? Yes, lets reduce the number of lanes just like you did on Barrett, everyone enjoys the extra 15 minuet commute trying to get to 80. This is Richmond . . . the only people that ride bikes in this area are crackheads and tweekers. Get your head out of your a$$
