Meeting set for Thursday to discuss Wilson Elementary campus rehab

Wilson Elementary's move to Portola Middle temp campus delayed

Residents are encouraged to attend a meeting on Thursday to view plans and provide input into the rehabilitation of the Wilson Elementary campus, and also to receive an update on the school’s move to a temporary campus at Portola Middle School in El Cerrito next fall.

The community meeting will run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Wilson Elementary, 629 42nd St. in Richmond.

Last school year, the West Contra Costa Unified School District’s Board of Education voted to relocate the Wilson Elementary school community in response to complaints of ceiling leaks and other problems at its aging campus. The relocation, initially expected to happen prior to this school year, was later delayed until June 2018.

The Portola Middle School temporary campus is located at Navellier Street at Moeser Lane in El Cerrito. It is expected to operate as a temporary campus for two academic years, during which time the Wilson Elementary campus will undergo a rebuild expected to cost about $40 million.

Students and teachers are expected to return to the 42nd Street campus during the 2020-21 school year.
