The Richmond Police Department is urging residents to withhold from setting off fireworks or gunfire during the New Year celebrations, emphasizing both as illegal and highly dangerous.
“Don’t start 2018 in a jail cell or with an expensive citation,” the department posted in a warning on Facebook.
“We have additional officers on the streets through this weekend,” police said. “If you are caught possessing or igniting them, you will be issued a citation with fines up to $2,000 or risk being arrested.”
Also, “Shooting guns in the air is extremely dangerous and illegal,” police added, saying bullets that go up come back down and can cause injury or death.
“Our officers are out in force looking for people who have a blatant disrespect of the law and the safety of others,” police said.
