Richmond brewery wins gold at major state competition

A Richmond brewery has won a gold medal in the California State Fair Commercial Beer Competition, which included 1,488 beer entries from more than 400 California breweries.

Benoit-Casper Brewing’s “Vienna Lager” took top honors in the Amber Bitter European Beer category of the competition, which involved 102 certified beer judges who sampled entries from June 8 to June 11.

Only beers brewed and available for sale in California were eligible for the competition.

Best of Show, a top overall prize, was awarded to Flatland Brewing Co. of Elk Grove for its blonde ale “Pilsner-ish.” Brewery of Year went to Loma Brewery of Los Gatos.

A complete list of Commercial Beer Competition winners can be found here.

It was the latest victory for Benoit-Casper, located at 1201 Pennsylvania Ave., after recently winning first place for its ALTen Amber at the NorCal Brew Competition at the Sonoma County Fair.
