When Alexis Bradley was invited to be a contestant in the 2017 Miss California USA competition, she was asked which city she wanted to represent. That answer came quickly.
“I told them immediately Richmond, Calif.,” Bradley said.
She’s elated at the opportunity to show the state — and perhaps even the universe — that her city produces passionate, talented, civic-minded people.
“I was born and raised here and would love to shine some positive light on our community because we do not get enough of it,” Bradley told the Richmond Standard.
Bradley certainly possesses qualities hailed by the Miss Universe Organization. The El Cerrito High grad supported herself financially to earn her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology at the University of California at Riverside. She used that degree to pursue a career working with underprivileged populations in the Bay Area. Bradley is currently a Community Health Worker at LifeLong Medical Care and is working toward the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.
This success, according to Bradley, came after battling low self-esteem and confidence during her teenage years.
“I spent a large majority of my childhood dreaming, but never felt confident enough to pursue those dreams,” she said.
Excelling in the classroom helped Bradley to achieve, grow and ultimately break out of her shell. She says she’s looking forward to reaching a whole new level of confidence and capability at the Miss California USA competition.
“I believe this platform will challenge me to not only be more confident in myself and what I am capable of, but also will give me an opportunity to represent my city and give a voice to young girls who aspire to achieve great things in life,” she said.
To support her pageant bid, Bradley has launched a gofundme fundraiser. The pageant’s cost is $1,800, which covers entry and wardrobe. The first $500 is due by the end of June, the remainder in September.
The pageant will be held Dec. 1 through Dec. 3 in Long Beach.
“I am also looking for sponsors to offer hair and makeup tips (and possibly style me for the event),” Bradley says in her gofundme account. “And if you know how to walk the runway, I would love those tips too.”
