School garden aims to grow Halloween pumpkin for every student

Urban Tilth, which operates more than a half-dozen local school and community gardens and small urban farms, has announced an effort at the Verde Elementary Partnership Garden to send every student at the school home with a pumpkin for the Halloween holiday.

The announcement was made on Facebook, where Urban Tilth posted an image of a 44-inch pumpkin growing the garden (pictured above), located near the North Richmond elementary school at 2000 Giramita St.

Urban Tilth uses the gardens and farms to provide nutritious foods to an underserved community, and also to provide an outdoor classrooms to educate local students and residents on nutrition, cooking and other food-related issues.

“If you have not already, please consider donating to our school campaign so we can continue to inspire our children and youth,” Urban Tilth said.
