East Brother Beer Co. has become one of Richmond’s most lively event hubs, and Sunday’s Summer Classic not only filled its Canal Boulevard tap room, but had the parking lot bustling with attendees as well.
The event’s second annual rendition — a free celebration for all ages promising ‘classic beers, classic cars and classic tunes—definitely delivered, even throwing in some classic arcade games.
Some food trucks rounded out the affair, with my first-grader son Logan and I diving into some fantastic finger foods from Curbside Kitchen (their French fries are perfect); Taqueria Esperanza seemed to be a popular hit as well.
The huge highlight was viewing all the cool cars on hand of course, including a lot of amazing muscle cars from the 60s and 70s. A ‘fan favorite’ vote selected a vintage El Camino as the winner, with an antique ‘Woody’ as the runner-up. White and his Your Search is Over band was the perfect act for the sunny late afternoon. If you’re not familiar with the YSIO band, they’re named for the Richmond barbershop owned by White that occasionally morphs into an evening social lounge with live music.
The Richmond PD also had a strong presence at the event, including an info booth and several officers on hand—even bringing a Camaro squad car for good measure. Sponsors for the Summer Classic included Hagerty Classic Car Insurance, the Food Emporium, the Point Richmond Neighborhood Council and the Point Richmond Business Association.
If you haven’t checked out the East Brother tap room yet, it really is a family-welcoming (and pet-friendly) setting, with board games, ping-pong, bocce, pinball and other all-age diversions. And on Friday, Aug. 31 the venue hosts another compelling event; this time it’s a Beer & Bootcamp function beginning with a rugged workout and ending with a cold pint.
