Richmond resident and entrepreneur Rosa Robinson, owner of Sweet Dreams Bake Shop, was the star of a great write-up on the For Richmond blog Tuesday.
After being laid off from her fifth job in three years, according to the nonprofit, Robinson had a “dream about cakes” that led her to becoming a pastry chef without formal training. She started her business last year on a leap of faith, but she also dove in with a sound strategy:
“She has learned along the way by never turning down an order for lack of knowledge,” For Richmond reported. “Anytime a new baking challenge has arisen, she has taught herself how to make it—with delicious results.”
The Richmond Standard noticed her talent earlier this year when we posted a photo of a cake that looked strikingly similar to a Louis Vuitton purse. She has also made cake-versions of high heeled shoes, cars and “anything her clients can dream up.”
“One of the highlights of her new-found career was baking a Neapolitan cake for Justin Timberlake for a big fan’s birthday—an opportunity that arose from a connection she had at Clear Channel Radio in San Francisco,” For Richmond said.
