2014Winter_JazzArt2_300_300Attendees of an afternoon concert at the Richmond Art Center on Saturday will be holding up pencils and paintbrushes rather than lighters.

Between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., the center will invite a jazz band to play in the painting room while a free art class is in session.

“Express yourself visually while you groove to the music,” organizers touted on the Richmond Arts Center website.

Acclaimed improvisational jazz musician India Cooke and friends will perform, organizers said, while Lisa di Prima, the artistic director of the Berkeley Jazz Art Program, will teach the class.

The class is free for all ages, although children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Drawing materials will be provided but attendees can bring their own.

While there are unlimited openings, those attending are encouraged to RSVP by calling (510) 620-6772.
