The El Cerrito Police Department has launched an investigation into a burglary on the 900 block of Liberty Street on Sunday.
The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. when an unknown individual entered a private home. Preliminary findings suggest that the intruder gained access to the house through a window that had been left partially open.
During the course of the burglary, the suspect began moving items from inside the residence to the exterior of the property. The activity caused the residents to wake up, which prompted the intruder to flee the scene immediately. Because the residents interrupted the act, the suspect was unable to take any additional property.
Detectives are investigating to identify the suspect and evaluate if this case is linked to other recent burglaries reported in the surrounding neighborhood. In response to the event, local law enforcement is advising community members to verify that all doors and windows are securely locked at night and when leaving the home.
Police officials also recommend that residents review their exterior lighting and general security measures to deter future incidents. Authorities encourage anyone with information, witness accounts, or surveillance footage from the Liberty Street area to assist the investigation. The department can be reached at (510) 215-4435 or via email at investigations@elcerrito.gov.
